Police have launched a week of action targeting the fatal four in a bid to reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured in crashes across Derbyshire.

The week coincides with the charity BRAKE’s annual road safety week and will see officers target the four most significant factors in terms of contributing to collisions as well as offering education to motorists.

The fatal four, which significantly increase the risk of being involved in a collision, are using a mobile phone while driving, speeding, not wearing a seatbelt or driving under the influence of drink or drugs.

Head of Roads Policing Chief Inspector Steve Wilson said: “Our operation is not just one week of action; it is part of an ongoing road safety strategy to help reduce the number of fatal and serious collisions in Derbyshire.

“We will be taking a zero tolerance approach to anyone caught committing one of the fatal four as part of the ongoing operation.

“However, it is not all about enforcement. My officers will also be engaging with drivers in the hope of changing their behaviour and educating them on the dangers associated with the fatal four.”
