Derbyshire was put on a snow and ice alert as the UK braced itself for freezing temperatures.

The Met Office issued a severe weather warning.

A 1,200-mile 'tongue of ice' will blow in from Canada, which could cause temperatures to drop to -10C in some parts of the country.

Forecasters are predicting icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths, making injuries or accidents more likely.

Showers of rain, hail and sleet are likely leading to a risk of ice on some surfaces as temperatures fall below freezing. Some snow is also possible.
