School children paraded around New Mills dressed as sailors, soldiers and superheroes on Saturday all in the name of this year’s carnival theme, uniforms.
Thousands of revellers lined the route to enjoy the sunshine and the longest procession of floats, bands and dancers for years.
Led by New Mills Brass Band and the town’s dignitaries, the parade wound its way through the town with floats dedicated to everyone from May Queen royalty to local businesses and schools. While walkers the Phoenix Pipe Band, Urban Gypsies, High Peak Samba, Chesterfield Musketeers, Loud and Proud cheerleaders, scouts, guides, army cadets, Wigan Pie Eaters motorcycle club and the Billerettes entertained the crowds.
The day continued on the recreation field with performances in the arena from the bands and dancers plus New Mills martial arts. Outside the arena there was the May Queen prize giving and dozens of stalls and fairground rides amply supported by a great selection of food and drink.
Carnival volunteer Northe Slack, from High Street Books, said: “This is the biggest New Mills Carnival I can remember, it’s so good to see so many happy children’s faces enjoying such a traditional event.”
Preparations are already underway for next year’s event which organisers hope to be bigger still and will take place on June 13, 2015. Organisers wished to thank Derbyshire County Council, High Peak Borough Council, New Mill Town Council and the New Mills shops, pubs and businesses who made this year the best year yet.
