VIDEO: Road closed after two lorries crash in the fog on A53

The crash on the A53 Leek to Buxton road at Flash Head, Quarnford happened today (Friday, March 11) around 9am in thick fog and the road is still closed while recovery takes place.

A bin lorry heading towards Leek had stopped to load a bin onto the lifter when it was hit from behind by a cement mixer - the cab of which has been destroyed.

Miraculously everyone has walked away unhurt but just shaken up.

Staffordshire refuse collector Ben Harding was loading the bin onto the wagon at the time.

He said: “We had stopped and I was at the back of the truck.

“I heard this really loud squeal of brakes and I just jumped out of the way.

“I think the driver swerved to try and miss me which is why it is at a funny angle.

“I don’t understand how every one is okay and I’m really lucky to be alive.
“I just don’t think he saw us in the fog.”

The driver of the second lorry did not want to give a comment to the Advertiser.

Before the road was closed one driver who did not wish to be named said: “I’m sitting with my hazzard lights on for a reason and someone just ignores that an overtakes me which could have lead to another accident.”

A spokesman for Staffordshire police said: “The road is blocked and has been closed at The Winking Man Public House whilst recovery takes place and Highways clear the road of debris and spilled fluid.

Road users are advised to avoid the area if possible as there will be delays until the road is re-opened.”
