Victory for High Peak little chef trio

Three dinky chefs have shown they have culinary know-how by winning a county-wide cooking contest.

The boys from Chapel Cubs won the Derbyshire-wide Ready Steady Cook Cubs challenge, to become County Champions.

The challenge involved cooking a two course meal for two people that would have been served in 1916 – using only two camping gas burners and no electrical equipment.

Sebastian Mooney and Nathan Look, both aged eight, and Matty George, aged nine, all from Whaley Bridge Primary School, took the theme of ‘welcome home Dad’ to prepare a special meal to welcome a father returning from the war, using as many home-grown and local ingredients as possible, that would have been available 100 years ago.

They cooked a pan-fried trout with herb and lemon stuffing, new potatoes and freshly-picked purple-sprouting broccoli. Pudding consisted of pancakes served with a plum and ginger sauce. They also made a blackcurrant cordial to accompany the meal.

The table was decorated with homemade bunting, a ‘welcome home Dad’ card and antique crockery.

Ian Clucas, leader of Chapel 1st Cubs Pack, said: “All the lads have put everything into doing the best job they could possibly do. They are a credit to 1st Chapel En-Le Frith Scout group and we are all sure this experience will stay with them for a long time to come. Maybe the lads could replicate the meal at the Cubs centenary camp which is to be held at Gradbach in a few months.”
