A lorry crashed in New Mills on Friday afternoon, spilling fuel and demolishing a street lamp and telegraph pole.
The 40-tonne, curtain-sided HGV overturned on High Hill Road at around 5pm, colliding with street furniture and leaking diesel and oil onto the road.
There are no reports of any injuries.
Firefighters from Whaley Bridge attempted to dam the nearby River Sett to contain the fuel, a Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson explained.
Electrical engineers were also in attendance, along with officers from the Highways Agency and the Environment Agency who are monitoring the situation.
