Derbyshire County Council said the 7.5-tonne limit has been placed on Sheffield Road after a routine inspection found issues with a culvert running underneath it.

Engineering specialists are now working to find a solution to strengthen the culvert, which could take up to three months.

Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Infrastructure, Councillor Simon Spencer, said: “We apologise for the inconvenience that this will cause, but we have no choice but to put a weight limit on the road so that we do not cause any more damage.

“Once the work takes place we will need to close Sheffield Road.”

A spokesperson added that businesses in the immediate area had been contacted and were being kept informed of the progress of the work.

Vehicles entering Chapel-en-le-Frith from the south on the A6 won’t be affected by the weight limit restrictions, but those coming from the north on the A6 will need to continue southbound on the A6 to Barmoor Clough roundabout then head northbound on the A6 and turn left on the B5470 Buxton Road/Market Street.

Work on the culvert will take place in the autumn, and while it does Sheffield Road will need to be closed from the junction with Buxton Road to the A6.
