A popular Chapel-en-le-Frith teenager died after suffering multiple injuries when he fell while out running, an inquest heard.

Thomas Theyer, 18, had been staying with his family at his auntie and uncle’s farm
in Glutton Bridge on July 18, 2013.

The next morning, he went out for a run but when he didn’t return, family members went to look for him and found him on Park House Hill.

Sadly, Thomas had suffered multiple traumatic injuries in the fall and tragically died, the inquest at Chesterfield Coroner’s Court heard.

A former pupil at St Thomas More School in Buxton, Thomas was a keen runner and had participated in both the Buxton Carnival road race and the Whaley Waltz fell race in the weeks before his death.

Assistant coroner Paul McCandless, recording a verdict of accidental death, said: “Thomas was clearly a popular and well thought of young man. He was a young man who liked to go for a run and cover some quite considerable distances.

“What I have read about Thomas is extremely interesting and quite life affirming.

“He was a fit young man with a full rewarding life and a loving family, who did no more than take off for a run up a local hill then sadly whilst running lose his footing and fall, sustaining the most
serious and indeed fatal injuries.”

Thomas, a student at the University of Derby, Buxton, was very close to his family and loved spending time with his mum Chris, dad Alan, sister Aimee, his Grandad Gordon and Grandma Dorothy as well as his extended family and family friends.

Since his death, Chris and Alan have set up the Thomas Theyer Foundation in his memory to help young people in the area. There are also plans for a permanent tribute to Thomas at his former school.

Speaking after the inquest, Chris said: “We miss Thomas so much but we want to do something good to keep his memory alive.

“We’d like to thank everyone who has helped and supported us since Thomas’ death, in particular: Brendan Hickey, Jill Duncan and Mary McNaught of St Thomas More School, who have introduced an annual award at St Thomas More’s: The Thomas Theyer - a True Ambassador of the School Award. Also, Buxton Athletics Club, the Goyt Valley Striders, the police and coroner’s office, and our friends and family.”
