Swimming club celebrates outstanding year of success

A fun night was had by all as Buxton Swimming Club celebrated an outstanding year at its annual presentation event.

Held at the Old Club House in Buxton, the night reflected the success the club has enjoyed since appointing Liam McWee as head coach and Verity Mycock as lessons co-ordinator.

Their triumphs have included winning their divisional championship in the Crusader Swimming League to gain promotion, record numbers of swimmers turning out for open meets and 11 new club records, set by Charlie Boam, Eleanor Turner and Louis and OIiver Ecob.

At the presentation night, hundreds of medals and more than 70 trophies were given out to swimmers of all ages, from seven upwards.

Most notable recipients were the top boy, Mathew Foreman, and the top girl, Chloe Montgomery-White, from the club championships.

Eight gold medals were presented to Chloe Montgomery-White, Isobel Stokes and Mia Stokes, while seven gold medals went to Foreman and Boam.

The top boy and girl from the club’s novice gala were Daniel Fitzgerald and Anwen Williams, while the endeavour award was presented to Annabelle Montgomery-White.

All the trophies were presented by the night’s star guest, 45-year-old Paralympian track cyclist Anthony Kappes, who took along his three gold medals from the London and Beijing Paralympic Games to show to the swimmers.

Once the formalities had been completed, the youngsters let their down on the dance floor and again showed their team spirit in the annual ‘Human Pyramid’ competition.

The girls won it, but the boys got their own back on the karaoke, thanks largely to a fabulous rendition of George Ezra’s ‘Budapest’ by Finn Hornsey-Saunders.
