Residents can enjoy some of Buxton’s best kept-secrets for free next week.

Heritage Open Days, from September 10-13, is an annual festival celebrating England’s local history, giving access to thousands of places usually closed to the public.

And the Old Hall Hotel, in conjunction with Netta Christie, Director of Discover Buxton Tours, will be offering up some hidden and rare sights.

On September 10, The Old Hall, originally built to provide accommodation for Mary Queen of Scots while she was under house arrest, will be opening up Mary’s Bower for ‘Tales from the Bower’ in conjunction with Discover Buxton, at 11am and 1pm.

And Netta Christie will lead guided tours of the assembly rooms of The Crescent at 11am on September 12 and 13.

Places are limited and pre-booking for both events is essential on 01298 22841, or by emailing

Also on September 12, at 2pm, Discover Buxton will be launching its latest character tour, ‘A Very Victorian Affair’, with top-hatted guide Robert Rippon Duke.

Commencing from the Pavilion Gardens promenade, the tour will offer rare insights into the life and times of a Victorian architect responsible for many of the town’s iconic buildings.

Pre-booking is required via or on 01298 79648.
