Snow is on the way to Derbyshire

A brutal blast of Arctic air is tightening its grip on Derbyshire – with the first snow of winter 2014 imminent.

Forecasters say wintry showers are expected to blanket the hills of the Peak District today – and further snow may even fall to lower areas of the county on Sunday into Monday.

Over the weekend, daytime temperatures will struggle to rise above 5C and overnight temperatures are set to plunge below freezing as air from Greenland covers the UK.

And a spell of unsettled and potentially disruptive weather – including gales and snow – could be on the way next week, according to the Met Office.

Drivers are being warned to be aware of icy roads during the big chill.

A Derbyshire police spokesman said: “We would warn motorists to take extra care on the roads as winter sets in.”

Gritters across Derbyshire are ready to deal with the cold snap.

Derbyshire County Council has just taken delivery of 15 new gritter lorries to replace 15 old ones and the authority has about 24,000 tonnes of grit in stock.

It costs £15,000 to grit the county’s primary and secondary routes.
