Runners go to '˜Fell '˜n' Back' in aid of Buxton Mountain Rescue Team

More than 100 people tackled a gruelling 20-kilometre fell race on Saturday to raise around £1,500 for the lifesaving organisation, which relies heavily on fundraising and donations.

Setting off from Burbage, the challenging route took participants out towards Axe Edge and Wildboarclough, before returning via the Cat and Fiddle and Goyts Moss. In total, it featured more than 700 metres of climbing.

Fundraising coordinator Richard Carratu said: “Considering it was only our first event we welcomed 102 runners, all supporting the rescue team.

The fell race covered a distance of 20 kilometres.

“The whole day was fantastic. The sun was out but it wasn’t too hot, and the ground conditions were perfect. The feedback from the runners was extremely complimentary.

“We grossed about £1,500 which will contribute towards new equipment and maintenance costs.”

The inaugural ‘Fell ‘n’ Back’ winner was Mark Burton, of Calder Valley, in a time of one hour, 24 minutes and 47 seconds. The first woman finisher was Frances Bromley, of Buxton Athletic Club, in one hour, 42 minutes and 59 seconds.

Richard said the team was grateful for the support provided on the day by rescue team members and supporters, Buxton Rotary Club and Goyt Valley Striders. He also thanked the local businesses which had donated prizes.

He added: “We are definitely planning to run it again next year; we have another route in mind which could make it even longer.”
