The Parents and Teacher Association (PTA) at St George’s Primary School, on Church Lane, has already raised £3,200 to install a library in the school - but needs a further £1,800 to hit its target.

Headteacher Mandy Brown said: “This library project has been in the pipeline for more than a year and when it is finished it will be at the very heart of the school.

“It will absolutely improve the children’s learning experiences and we really can’t wait for it to be here.”

Becky Lambert, committee member for the PTA, has been organising the fundraising.

She said: “The library project has already raised the profile of reading and the interest-level in books throughout the school.

“We were able to provide a small classroom library of topic-related books for each class during the last half term.

“These were well received and well-used by teachers and pupils, and created a buzz of excitement that was very encouraging to see.

“A well-stocked, well-designed and well-used library at St George’s will have a lasting affect on generations of children at the school.”

Businesses are being asked to sponsor a book case, costing £150, and the school intends to provide plaques to acknowledge all the sponsors.

Becky said: “Reading is central to learning and we hope to create a welcoming environment where children read for pleasure.”

The school has been collating and cataloguing the books and now is looking to have sufficient and accessible shelving to display the books.

Anyone who would like to sponsor a bookcase or make a donation is asked to contact the school on 01663 743222.

•There will be a fundraiser at Itsy Bitsy Boutique in Chapel-en-le-Frith on Friday, December 8, between 7pm and 9pm, when 15 per cent of all money raised will go to the school library.
