The fight was a re-match in the 64kg weight category, and the 18-year-old Russell had to travel to Harkson’s home town of Worksop for the challange.

It proved to be a lively, action-packed contest throughout the three rounds, with the Worksop boxer pressing forward from the opening bell.

Russell remained disciplined during the early stages of the first round, keeping balance and a high guard, and avoiding the oncoming punches, while scoring with the jab.

Harkson also began round two with aggressive intent. However, this soon subsided and allowed Russell to work into a lead after a close first frame.

Pushing his opponent back, the Buxton boxer had success by drawing Harkson’s hands to the head to expose the target area for heavy left hooks. Harkson took the shots well, but they were scoring and having an impact.

Anticipating another quick start to the final round by the home fighter, Russell was ready for the early rush and soon found success, pressing and finding a home for the left hook to the body.
