Police are warning businesses after staff at a shop in Tideswell were tricked by a ‘ringing the changes’ scam.

At around 2pm on Wednesday, July 27, a man entered the Co-operative store on Commercial Road in Tideswell.

As he made a small purchase at the counter, he asked the cashier to change some money. During the exchange of the cash, he managed to confuse the member of staff who was serving him and left with more money than he entered with.

Officers are now reminding businesses to make sure staff are aware of the scam, and if they feel under pressure, or suspicious of a customer with this request, to ask a colleague to watch, to take their time or to not be afraid of politely saying no.
