Police appeal for witnesses after death in New Mills

POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a man was found dead in The Torrs in New Mills.

On Friday, April 13 at about 7.35pm, 53 year-old local man Roy Townsend was found in the Torrs under the bridge on Church Road, New Mills. He was seen shortly before this by a passer-by on the bridge at the junction of Union Road and Church Road.

The man was described as wearing blue jeans, a white shirt, blue jumper and a tweed jacket. He was also wearing trainers and a dark coloured anorak.

Detective Inspector Shaun McElheron of Buxton CID said “Whilst we are not treating the death as suspicious we are anxious to find out Mr Townsend’s movements and demeanour prior to him falling from the bridge into The Torrs. The next of kin have been informed and a file is being prepared for the coroner.”

Police are investigating the circumstances of how Mr Townsend fell from the bridge and would like anyone who saw him on the evening of April 13 to contact Buxton CID using the non-emergency number 101.
