Good weather saw the crowd triple from last year and families were queuing from the Cricket Club down the road for 200 yards and the lighting of the bonfire was delayed to ensure everyone was in.

Lions president, Henry Kukiewicz, said: “It was a phenomenal event and it was unbelievable to see so many people had come out.

“I have only been in Buxton nine years but I am told by other longer-serving members the celebrations on Saturday were the biggest and best in many years.”
Hearts stopped when the countdown failed to start the firework display fortunately Pains, the professionals who have managed the Buxton fireworks for many years, quickly managed to correct a technical fault and another count down set off 20 minutes of pyrotechnics.

Henry added: “We are absolutely delighted that the event was so successful and safe. As a result we will be able to support many more local worthy causes in the coming year. Our thanks go to all those who supported and attended and we hope to see you all back again in 2017.”
