Brian’s great-granddaughter Daisy Lee was born weighing 8lb 11oz at Wythenshawe Hospital at 6.58pm while Mervyn’s grandson Theodore Laird weighed 9lb 5oz when born at 4.30pm.

Brian’s daughter Alison Mellor, of Chapel-en-le-Frith, described the experience as ‘unreal’.

She said: “The fact that they’ve both become granddads on the same day is insane.”

“My dad’s getting better at it and he just sits there looking at her in awe.”

Brian plans on seeing his great-granddaughter a little closer to home - through the window of granddaughter Shannon Williams’ Whaley Bridge house when she is discharged from hospital.

Proud grandmother Alison added: “I was saying to colleagues on Sunday ‘what are the chances of that - both becoming granddads on the same day?’. It’s unbelievable.”
