“There are numerous reports of plenty of vehicles parked up in isolated spots such as the A57 Snake Pass while people are out walking and are now getting stuck.”

At 3.45pm, police said the Snake Pass and Goyt’s Lane off Long Hill, near Buxton, had been closed.

A Met Office yellow ‘be aware’ warning of snow and ice started at around 9.30am on Saturday and is valid until 6pm.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: “Southward-moving areas of sleet and snow are likely to give 2-5cm of snow over higher ground above 200-300m while at lower levels snow accumulations will be smaller and patchier in nature with 1-2cm of snow for some.”
