The digital fad started with youngsters in the USA who were adding powder to their hair and donning granny outfits, sunglasses and head coverings to make themselves look older before trying their luck at booze stores.

Posts of the pranks have gone viral on the social media site, with one video being viewed more than two million times.

Now, youngsters in the Derbyshire Dales have copied the trend and tried their luck at buying alcohol at local shops while dressed up in disguise, police have confirmed.

Spencer Nixon, a PCSO in the Derbyshire Dales, sent out an email alert to warn traders.

It read: “Message to for anyone who sells alcohol. Latest trend for youngsters trying it on is to dress up as old people cover their face with a CV19 mask and headscarf etc and visit local shops to purchase alcoholic beverages.

"They will even try to walk hunched over. Girls especially are using this trick to fool shop staff.”

A spokesman for Derbyshire Police said: “An officer in Matlock had heard about an online fad in which young people had purported to dress up as elderly people in an attempt to buy alcohol. There have been reports of this in the area and this was simply to raise awareness that this may happen and that shopkeepers should be on the lookout.”
