A Buxton family is inviting people to remember the loved ones they have lost in a year which has brought sadness to many.

The Thomas Theyer Foundation, launched in memory of a teenager who passed away in 2013, is holding a virtual Lake of Lights event this year.

People are urged to buy a light online and will be sent a yellow ribbon that they can tie on the rails at the bandstand in the Pavilion Gardens.

Thomas Theyer’s mum Chris will be in the park on December 5 to switch lights on at the bandstand and a nearby tree and tie a yellow ribbon in tribute to her son.

Last year, the foundation’s first Lake of Lights event raised £2435. There were 750 lights floated in memory of loved ones at the Pavilion Gardens.

Due to the current pandemic, the charity is unable to hold an event with people congregating at the same time. But this hasn’t stopped the foundation in wanting to provide an opportunity for the community to remember their loved ones.

The bandstand and the tree will be lit up until early January, giving yellow ribbon recipients the opportunity to go and remember their loved ones peacefully and privately, or with family members, in their own time.

Thomas Theyer was 18 when he passed away at the age of 18. At primary school, he was diagnosed with Dyspraxia and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD).

An avid runner, he was a member of Buxton Athletics Club Juniors and completed the Whaley Waltz Fell Race and the Buxton 4 Road Race just three weeks before he died.

Thomas’ family, including mum Chris, dad Alan and sister Aimee, launched the foundation which achieved charitable status in 2015.

The foundation is aiming to raise money to build a lodge at the White Hall Education Centre, providing access to outdoor activities and respite accommodation for children and young people with additional needs.

Fundraising continues throughout the year and is boosted by The Thomas Theyer Foundation Sports and Outdoor charity shop which opened at London Road, Buxton, three years ago.
