Posting on Facebook, she said: “Last night the most horrific thing happened and we thought our beautiful boy was gone forever, he fell off the sheer East face of Mam Tor. It was a freak accident but according to the vet it happens all too regularly, but most aren't as lucky as Sonny.

“We don't quite know how he did it but he managed to climb back up the rock face like a true super hero He has sustained head injuries and cuts and bruises but hopefully with lots of love and time he will be back to the mischievous puppy that we all love so much.

“Please if you are walking your four legged best friends don't assume that the worst can't happen and that they won't suddenly run off, keep them close.”

Mam Tor is a popular spot with walkers, offering breathtaking viewpoints across the Peak District and standing at 1,696 ft at its highest point.
