In the past three months more than a quarter of the 1,400 Samaritans volunteers nationwide had spoken to people who were feeling apprehensive about the Christmas period.

Being separated from family and loved ones has always been a common concern among Samaritans callers at this time of year, even without a global pandemic to contend with.

Last December, the charity received more than a quarter of a million calls, including 10,000 on Christmas Day.

Buxton & High Peak branch director Jill Pearson said: “We know that Christmas can be difficult for many people, as it’s a time when loneliness can really hit home and that this might be heightened this year.

“Regardless of what happens with Covid restrictions, we want people to know that confidential support is available 24/7, and that we are there for everyone this Christmas.”

She added: “Every call for help is answered by a trained volunteer and talking to us is always free and confidential. Samaritans has never been a more vital lifeline.”

Among those who can attest to the charity’s importance is Jason, 50, who felt his whole world had fallen to pieces one Christmas following his mum’s death, the loss of his job, and separation from the mother of his son.

He said: “The hardship faced by people trying to cope with the pandemic reminds me how overwhelming everything became for me that Christmas.

"Thankfully my ex-wife convinced me to pick up the phone to Samaritans. It was one of the hardest things I have done but that phone call changed my life and put me on a new path. Samaritans gave me hope and helped me to find my purpose again.”

There is another way that High Peak residents can help, said Jill: “If you can make a donation to support our work, it will ensure we can be there to listen not just over Christmas but throughout the year.”
