National treasure Patricia Routledge is making good her pledge that the show must go on after having to cancel her appearance in July’s Buxton International Festival because of a fall just before going on stage.
Dame Patricia, best known as Hyacinth Bucket in TV’s Keeping Up Appearances, is returning to Buxton on Friday November 17 to present Facing The Music – A Life In Musical Theatre with the distinguished music critic Edward Seckerson.
“No-one was more disappointed than Dame Patricia when she was forced to cancel her appearance at this year’s Buxton International Festival,” said festival development manager Joanne Williams.
“Both she and her loyal audience wanted a return visit, and we’re thrilled that we’ve been able to secure one.
"We’d also like to offer free tickets to nurses from the A&E department at Stepping Hill Hospital and the Minor Injury Unit at Buxton Hospital.”
“I can’t praise the services of the NHS too highly,” said Patricia, who will be in conversation with Edward, a writer and broadcaster who wrote and presented the long-running BBC Radio 3 series Stage & Screen. “They were marvellous.
“I’m thrilled that the festival has found a spot for us so that we are able to come back so soon. It’s a very important festival and embraces so much.”
The evening will concentrate on Dame Patricia’s career musical theatre, both in this country and on Broadway, winning Tony and Olivier awards for performances in shows such as Darling for the Day, Candide and Carousel.
Edward will guide the audience through that part of her career while sharing rare and treasured recordings of her work.
“I love Buxton,” said Dame Patricia, who is looking forward to stepping on to the opera house stage. “It will be a very special evening for me.”
Alison Lynch, Director of Nursing and Quality at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Stepping Hill Hospital, said: “We are delighted that Patricia was so happy with the care we gave her after her fall, and it’s great that she’s now back on her feet.
"The free tickets for our staff are a lovely gesture and I’m sure they’ll be very eagerly snapped up.”
Facing The Music – A Life In Musical Theatre will be at Buxton Opera House on November 17, at 7.30pm.
Tickets, priced £18 or £22, are available from the box office on 01298 72190.
