In the first of two offences, at around 1.50am on Tuesday, March 8, offenders smashed the patio doors of a property along Kingfisher Way, activating the house alarm.

As the alarm sounded, the homeowner came downstairs to see two men running out of the smashed patio doors and over the garden fence.

The thieves had smashed the patio doors and carried out a search before taking the homeowner’s car keys. Then then fled and drove off in the victim’s grey Audi S3.

The men were described as wearing dark clothing with the hoods up and possibly spoke in a Manchester accent.

Two men aged 35 and 36-years-old have since been arrested and questioned in connection with the theft.

Sometime between 8am and 6pm on Thursday, March 3, offenders smashed the rear patio doors of a property along Sheffield Road in Glossop. Once inside, they carried out a search and made off with jewellery and the victim’s car keys.

Officers investigating the theft are interested to hear from anyone who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously in the Sheffield Road and Queens Drive areas. (CR/9724/16)

Following the burglaries, officers from the town’s Safer Neighbourhood team are urging home owners to remain vigilant and to take steps to protect their property from thieves.

Advice includes:

Before leaving your property unattended or going to bed, make sure that all doors and windows are properly locked with the keys removed from the lock;

Never leave keys on show, in locks, on window ledges or kitchen/hall tables, on a hook behind the door, or in reach of a letterbox or cat flap;

Ensure that any valuables and personal documents are left out of view from passers-by;

Consider using timer switches or leaving a light on when not at home;

Photograph and mark valuables with a security fluid such as SmartWater. This will help police to return items to you should they be stolen and later recovered;

If you notice anything suspicious, please report it to police as soon as possible on 101, the non-emergency number, except in an emergency when the number is always 999.

Anyone with any information about the above crimes are urged to call police on 101, quoting the crime number mentioned above, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
