It’s worth taking some time to reflect on what has happened since then.

I have been keeping the pressure on ministers to ensure progress is made with the restoration of Toddbrook Reservoir.

In February, I called on the Government to publish the full report on the inquiry into the incident and it was soon afterwards.

The people of Whaley Bridge deserve answers and lessons need to be learned from the structural failures of the dam.

Ministers quickly accepted the recommendations in the report and will be taking them forward.

I am following their work very closely, ready to speak out so that nothing like the events of last year can ever happen again.

The evacuation of Whaley Bridge is also a reminder of how climate change poses a direct threat to local communities by causing more extreme weather.

There are so many energetic environmental groups in High Peak and they are a tremendous asset in the fight against climate change.

I am still pushing hard for strengthened environmental protections and net-zero emissions.

Temporary repairs for Toddbrook Reservoir have been completed.

F ull repairs now must be completed as soon as possible.

We should not just aim to repair the reservoir, but should also enhance it for decades to come.

This means looking at a circular path round the reservoir and the possibility of a hydroelectric generator scheme.

This week, the Canal & River Trust launched a local consultation on different restoration options.

You can find details about taking part here.

The people of Whaley Bridge were able to pull together during the evacuation last year and have continued to show true grit and determination during the coronavirus crisis.

We still face difficult times ahead but I am confident that, working together, the High Peak can take on any challenge.
