As chief executive of Healthwatch Derbyshire, I hear firsthand how important it is for people to have a voice in shaping local health services, writes Helen Henderson.

When it comes to smoking, we know it’s can be a personal issue, one that affects individuals and families.

That’s why we are running a new project that gives Derby and Derbyshire residents the chance to share their experiences and help improve services.

Smoking remains a major public health challenge. The reasons why people start, continue, or choose to quit are varied. The best way to understand these experiences is to listen directly to local people.

We’re hoping to hear from local people living in housing association properties, to learn about their choices.

We’d also like to learn more about they feel about messaging around quitting, and the support they may, or may not, have received. Our survey is open to both people who currently smoke and to people who have smoked in the past.

Your input will help shape future health communication strategies targeted at smoking and make sure they are designed with real people in mind. The aim is to improve communication and support services so they work better for the people who may want to use them.

Completing the survey takes just 5-10 minutes, and as a thank you, people can enter a prize draw to win one of three £50 Love2shop vouchers.

But more importantly, by taking part, you are making a real difference – helping decision-makers understand what works, what doesn’t, and what needs to change.

If you, or someone you know, is a smoker living in a Derby or Derbyshire housing association home, I urge you to take part. Your story could be the catalyst for change, leading to better support and resources for those looking to quit or manage their smoking in a way that works for them.

You can share your experiences by completing the survey here: https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/HAsmoking-survey/
