WHALEY Bridge gymnast Jennifer Pinches has made the Team GB squad for the London 2012 Olympics – which start in just 15 days.
The 18-year-old will join three-time World Champion and Great Britain’s most successful gymnast Beth Tweddle in the Women’s Artistic team.
Also in the team, which will kick off Team GB’s gymnastics campaign at London 2012 on July 28, are Imogen Cairns – regarded as one of Great Britain’s finest vaulters, British champion Hannah Whelan and 15-year-old Rebecca Tunney – Team GB’s youngest athlete.
Jennifer has been involved in gymnastics since she was six, and now trains at the City of Liverpool Gymnastics Club, under coach Amanda Reddin – herself a former Olympic athlete. The Team GB gymnastics team selection announcement last week brought major celebrations for the club, with four out of the five members of the women’s artistic team – Jennifer, Beth, Hannah and Rebecca - all training there.
In October, Jennifer was part of a six-strong women’s team who helped earn the GB team Olympic qualification at the World Championships in Tokyo.
Despite an almost full-time gymnastic career, Jennifer has also fared well academically - achieving an A and two Bs in her AS Levels. She was also due to take her A2 Levels in English Language and Psychology just before the Olympics.
And Jennifer’s talents don’t just extend to sport – she has also been spotted by leading theatrical casting agents and directors.
British Gymnastics Olympic Performance Director Tim Jones, said: “We are extremely proud to be able to name such a strong team to compete for Team GB in the Gymnastics disciplines in London.”
lThe Artistic Gymnastics competition will run from July 28 to August 2 and from August 5 to 7 at the North Greenwich Arena.
