The Met Office has this morning issued yellow ‘be aware’ alerts of snow and ice in the county between 2pm tomorrow and 12pm on Monday.

During that period, areas 250 metres above sea level – like Buxton – will experience up to five centimetres of snow. Lower levels can expect to see a mixture of snow, sleet and hail.

It is the first Met Office snow warning to be issued for Derbyshire so far this winter.

A spokesman for the Met Office said: “Accumulating snow may lead to travel disruption on routes over high ground, while icy stretches are likely to form on untreated surfaces.

“The public should be aware of the potential for disruption to travel during Sunday night and Monday morning.

“The public is advised to take extra care.”

A big chill has enveloped the county since Monday – when winter began in meteorological terms.

And a spell of unsettled and potentially disruptive weather – including gales and snow – could be on the way next week, according to the Met Office.
