New social group for Buxton's over 65s

Our Kind of Music is the pilot initiative for new group Alive and Kickin’, which is being run through Voluntary and Community Services Peaks and Dales, and will provide company and activities to people living without much social interaction.

The first session will be at The Eagle, on Eagle Parade, Buxton, on Thursday September 6, between 1pm and 3pm.

Colin Floyd, one of the project co-ordinators, said: “The name of the club was chosen by the over-65s we have been working with.

“They didn’t grow up listening to Vera Lynn and Bing Crosby, they are just as likely to have listened to The Beatles, and Elvis, so that’s the sort of thing we will be offering.”

If successful, the club may be rolled out in other areas across the High Peak.

The charity has been awarded a £79,587 grant by Comic Relief to deliver the three-year project, which aims to help older people get more involved in their communities by offering them a range of new social activities that they can eventually take control of themselves as volunteers.

Colin said: “We’ve set up a steering group which is helping us to design other new activities for older people.”

Our Kind of Music sessions cost £4, including tea and coffee, although the bar will be open. There will also be a free raffle. For more information, email [email protected].
