New Mills walkway remains shut after vandalism

The Millennium Walkway in New Mills, built in 1999, was closed on May 3 after vandals cut several of the tension wires.

It will have remained closed for almost four weeks by the time it is reopened again, with repairs set to take place from Tuesday, May 29.

However, this will mean that the iconic structure built on stilts across the River Goyt in the Torrs Gorge, will remain closed over the bank holiday.

A spokesman for Derbyshire County Council said: “Unfortunately we were forced to close the Millennium Walkway at New Mills following vandalism.

“We assessed the damage and ordered specialist parts so that our contractors could carry out repairs.

“It is expected that they will be able to start work on Tuesday and open the walkway again later the same day.

“Sadly, this means the walkway will be closed for the bank holiday and we apologise for any inconvenience, but the repairs must be carried out to ensure everyone’s safety.”

The 160-metre-long walkway, when it was built, provided the vital “missing link” for the Mid Shires Way, allowing people to walk the whole 275-mile scenic trail.
