Some eagle-eyed Whaley Bridge residents may have noticed that a bench on Market Street has disappeared, however it is being re-homed after vandalism meant it could no longer stay there.

The bench is dedicated to former councillor Burt Atwood and where it will go is being discussed at the next Whaley Bridge Town Council meeting next month.

Resident Dorothy Johnson, is not happy. She said: “It breaks up the walk from the bus stop and town, and I don’t like the fact it has gone.”

The bench has been removed by the landlord who owns the Bridge Bakehouse, as vandals have been getting drunk and vomiting on it and staff were regularly coming in early to clean up the area before the shop opened.

Whaley Bridge Town Council Clerk, Keith Bradshaw, said: “The bench will be going back but it can’t stay where it was so we will look to find it a new home as soon as possible.”
