THE 84th annual Hayfield May Queen celebrations took place at the weekend with dry weather ensuring bumper crowds.
The event attracted a variety of colourful floats and foot characters reflecting this year’s theme of Children’s books as the procession wound its way through the village on Saturday afternoon.
And the sun even came out as retiring queen Robyn Taylor and retiring rosebud Keira Gerrard handed over their crowns to the 2011 royalty - May Queen Ella Ingham, Princess Gabby Lee and Rosebud Nuala Roscoe.
This year’s parade featured a number of regular faces such as the Billerettes and the Urban Gypsies as well as some newer acts including the New Mills Gymnasts and the Loud and Proud Cheerleaders to ensure Saturday’s was one of the largest parades for many years.
After the procession events carried on in the carnival field including the parade of visiting royalty and a new feature for this year, the bazaar.
Events have continued throughout the week including a pet show and a fell race. Later in the year there will be a Scarecrow competition to coincide with the village Wells Dressing as well as the annual car boot sale.
