A BUXTON couple are celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary today, March 24, with a family get together.

Les and Peggy Starkey met when aged 16 and 14 when he was a cabinet maker and she was an apprentice upholsterer at EC Stott and Co Ltd in Spring Gardens.

They married, seven years later, at Burbage Church in 1951 after Les had left the Army.

In 1968 the devoted couple were able to purchase their home on Victoria Park Road. “Peggy had a bit of luck and won at the bingo,” explained Les, “It put us on our feet a little bit. She won £3,400.”

The couple have a son Graham, daughter Mandy, six grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Both were keen bowlers, playing for Ashwood Park Bowling Club, where Les continues to play, and are both members of Buxton Working Men’s Club. Les was also involved for many years in Neighbourhood Watch.

Due to health issues Peggy now lives in a specialist care home in High Lane which Les visits often.
