SATURDAY was a special day for one Whaley Bridge woman as she celebrated her 104th birthday.
Marian Parkes, of Wharf Road, moved to Whaley Bridge in 1935 and has lived there ever since.
Born in 1907, the youngest of nine children, Marian went to Cavendish School and can still remember all the teacher’s names.
After leaving school she worked in a cake/toffee shop but didn’t enjoy it so after two weeks, she left and began doing the books for the family butcher’s shop on Fairfield Road, Buxton.
At the age of 28, Marian got married and went on to have two daughters, one of whom still lives with her.
She celebrated her special day with a meal at the Pavilion Gardens restaurant with family and friends.
