The accolade comes in part two of The Sunday Times Best Places to Live guide, which is published on Sunday March 20 and lists 13 towns, which also includes Lichfield in Staffordshire.

The annual supplements combine data and statistics such as crime rates, house prices and school performance with the local knowledge and expertise of Sunday Times writers to compile the definitive top locations to make your home.

The locations were selected for offering the best quality of life to the widest number of people, and combining desirable features such as a positive community spirit, good local shops and services and attractive outdoor spaces.

On hearing the news, Roddie MacLean, chairman of Buxton Town Team, said: “They are right. From the town team’s point of view some people think that the town team needs to do stuff because it’s a sign of what’s wrong with the place, when infact it’s what’s right with the place.

“What the town team does makes it more welcoming and better for people in the town and people can get involved.”
