A litter-picking dog is tidying up after the messy people in Grin Low Woods.

Cracker, a springer spaniel who is nearly seven, picks up the dropped litter when he goes for a walk.

His owner Kath Spencer said: “It’s something he has always done and while I’m used to it I can see it looks funny to new people.

“Both his parents were gun dogs and were used to go out shooting and collect birds so this is just the next step for him.”

Whenever he goes walking he is normally seen with three or four plastic bottles in his mouth although he has sometimes picked up things he should not have.

Kath said: “Last year it cost me £2,500 in vet bills after he swallowed the top from a walking stick which had fallen on the ground.

“He has also picked up a dirty nappy which was left behind a rock up at Solomon’s Temple too which wasn’t very nice.”

The woods are owned by Buxton Civic Association and Business Development Manager Simon Fussell said: “If a dog can pick up litter then why can can’t people?

“I hope this registers with people and they start taking their own rubbish home as it ruining the woods we work so hard to protect and look after.”

Kath said: “It is a shame that there is so much litter which needs picking up it shouldn’t be like that.

“I won’t let Cracker pick up everything, I try and avoid bottle lids and metal cans but he’s happy and doing something good so I just let him carry on really.”
