High Peak Borough Council will no longer operate the lease for the weekly outdoor market in Chapel-en-le-Frith, it has been announced.
The market operates every Thursday on land at the Market Place, rented from the Duchy of Lancaster, but the authority has served notice on the Duchy to terminate the lease with effect from December 10.
The council is now recommending that the two regular traders on the market seek permission to continue to trade from the landlord after December 10.
Cllr Liam McCarthy, chair of Chapel Parish Council, said: “The council did give us warning that they were likely to terminate the lease.
“We think the market is an important local service, particularly for the more elderly, and we hope the traders are successful in being granted the lease to continue the market.”
