Judges in the Midlands Media Awards 2012 praised this year’s high standard of entries – which included the Buxton Advertiser’s Louise Bellicoso, one of the finalists for the weekly newspaper reporter of the year title.

Organised on behalf of Birmingham Press Club, the Awards recognise the achievements of journalists in the region’s newspapers, magazines, digital platforms, television and radio.

This year, there were more than 360 entries, the quality of which was described by judges as “extremely high.” Press Club Chairman John Lamb said: “At a time when journalism is being put through unprecedented and, in my view, dangerous scrutiny, and is undergoing a contraction in many areas, it is heart-warming to receive so many entries brimming with enthusiasm and pride.”

Advertiser Editor John Phillips said: “We’re all very proud of Louise, who was nominated for her amazing work in our Hands Off Corbar Campaign which tried to save the maternity unit from closure.”

The weekly reporter title was won by Paul Kemp, of the Tamworth Herald.
