Pauline and David Wood, Robin and Dorothy Garrett and Iris and Edwin Armett were in the Patients’ Lounge at the hospice when they met Mr Waite, a hospice patron, who was there for the day meeting patients and staff.

Terry told them that as a boy, when resident in Styal, he would cycle up to Buxton over the Cat & Fiddle.

Mrs Wood said: “It was a real bonus to have the opportunity to meet Terry Waite. We are so impressed with the hospice, not only the amazing care given to patients but how welcome we feel as visitors. Nothing is too much trouble.”

Around 12 per cent of the hospice’s patients come from Buxton. Terry later hosted a lunch for volunteers and guests at the hospice.
