The two-year Hospice at Home pilot, run in collaboration with existing healthcare professionals, has been launched by Chapel-en-le-Frith-based Blythe House in response to calls for greater patient choice.

The service will support patients and their families and carers with sitters day and night. Overnight sits will offer carers the chance to have a good night’s sleep, while a few hours during the day gives carers a break to go shopping or have time for themselves.

Dr Sarah Parnacott, Palliative Medicine Consultant for the High Peak, said: “The Blythe House Hospice at Home service will make a phenomenal difference for patients in the High Peak who are dying and wish to stay in their own homes.

“The support this exciting new service offers should enable this to be a realistic possibility for individuals and their relatives to feel safe and cared for in their own environment.

“This service has the potential to transform end of life care in the High Peak.”

Hospice at Home will be available to patients registered with a GP in High Peak and to those already accessing Blythe House Hospice services.

Peter Toft and his wife Karen said: “Harry and Lily would have been so pleased to know that their gift has been used in this way. We’re honoured to represent them today at this very special launch.”

Hospice Director Janet Dunphy added: “The generosity of our supporters and, in particular, this legacy left to us by Harry and Lily, has made it possible for us to develop Hospice at Home services. We are proud to be in a position to turn this generosity into a new lasting gift for our community.”
