Organisers reported a six per cent rise in visitor numbers for a first day – as the sun blazed down on the quarry in Harpur Hill.

More than 500 UK and overseas suppliers – including Bell Equipment, Hyundai and Hitachi – have been welcomed to the event, many of them using it as a platform for the launch of their latest products.

Hillhead also provides a unique opportunity to see the equipment in action across four live demonstration areas.

JCB aims to provide the X factor at this year’s exhibition with its brand new 20-tonne 220X tracked excavator.

In addition, the Volvo-powered Man Engine – a giant mechanical puppet – will make a special guest appearance.

The three-day show – which provides a welcome boost to the local economy as businesses cater for visitors – continues today and ends tomorrow.
