High Peak is acknowledging former South African President Nelson Mandela who died on Thursday by flying the flag on Buxton town hall at half mast until Monday.

Council leader Caitlin Bisknell said: “Words such as legend, icon and hero are used all too often today – but not in this case. Mr Mandela was in life, and will remain, an inspiration to past, present and future generations.

“He showed that political divides can and should be crossed, and that we must all move with the times. While we mourn his passing, we remember his achievements that have touched so many around the world.”

The flag on Glossop Municipal Buildings cannot be lowered for health and safety reasons.
