Grandmother, 63, to cycle 300 miles with her sister in memory of mum and auntie

A 63-year-old grandmother who has lost two of her close family members to cancer, including her mum, is set to cycle 300 miles from London to Paris to raise vital funds to help with research into the disease.

Jayne Denby, of Main Street, Chelmorton, will be cycling with her younger sister Rebecca, who was also diagnosed with cancer in 2010, on the ride between July 27-30.

Their mum Edna, died of the disease aged 45, when Jayne was nine and Rebecca just two.

Their auntie Verna also passed away from cancer, as did Jayne’s brother-in-law Rob, aged 50.

Jayne said: “I have been lucky enough to avoid cancer but in 2012, whilst training for my first triathlon, I was diagnosed with a faulty heart valve: a problem that was probably caused by childhood disease.

“Heart surgery, encouragement from my medical team and fantastic heart rehab at Cavendish Hospital and New Bodies gym in Buxton helped me to regain my fitness and I was able to complete the Brownlee super-sprint triathlon in September 2015, raising the first £600 towards this fund.

“The cycle ride will be a real challenge, supported by a professional team and I would like to raise at least £2,000 for Cancer Research. My generation has much improved chances to beat cancer, now I want to leave a legacy for the next generation that improves their chances.”
