Glossop youngsters bag two tripies at the National Windsurfing Championships

Glossop Sailing Club's team of young windsurfers enjoyed a successful haul at the RYA/UKWA National Windsurfing Championships as they returned from Rutland Water with two trophies and a new brand windsurfing board last weekend (15-16 September).

Representing the club’s Glossop Gladiators Team15 outfit, 11-year-old Jessica Perrin won a trophy for finishing first girl and second overall in the 13-strong 3.5 fleet, while Rebecca Hall, 15, was crowned top girl and fourth overall in the competitive 5.8 fleet, which featured 28 sailors. In windsurfing, sailors racing with the same size sail (m2) compete in the same fleet.

In total 11 Glossop Gladiators competed at Rutland, with the youngsters taking sixth spot overall in the Team15 Champions Cup team competition - run concurrently with the National Championships - having been crowned Midlands Regional champions earlier this month. The T15 Champions Cup was lifted by the Oxford Zoomers.

To top it all off, the Glossop team also won the raffle for a state-of-the art Bic Techno windsurf board, presented by sailing’s national governing body, the RYA, that will give even more local youngsters access to top quality kit to develop their windsurfing skills on Torside Reservoir.

Viki Packman, Glossop SC Commodore and Training Principal, said: “Congratulations to the whole team and in particular Jessica and Rebecca for their personal success.

“It’s always a thrill to see our young sailors holding their own with the country’s brightest young talents and enjoying the social aspect an event like this brings. The camaraderie between all the sailors is always fantastic and it’s a pleasure to be part of it.”

Team15 is the grassroots programme run by the RYA, giving kids aged 15 and under the chance to develop windsurfing skills as part of a fun weekly club. Many of Glossop’s youngsters were introduced to windsurfing through the club’s RYA OnBoard scheme, which makes it easier and cheaper to get more young people aged 8-18 on the water by providing low cost sailing and windsurfing sessions through schools, youth groups and families.
