One man’s journey to Middle Earth will see him run hundreds of miles across several countries - with nothing but basic camping equipment and he will be doing it dressed as Frodo from Lord of the Rings.
Dan Mayers, from Market Place, Buxton, is a personal trainer and wants to get across to people that running has been around for centuries as a way of getting from one place to another rather than just a sport it is now.
He said: “A couple of hundred years ago you had to move yourself from place to place as there was no planes or trains. I want to show people what the human body is capable of and try and promote a more active lifestyle.”
The 31-year-old will be doing the Manchester Marathon on Sunday April 10 and after that he will keep running until he reaches the sea, where he will board a ferry to Holland and from there run to Mordor in Germany.
“I’ve always been short and people used to call me Frodo from Lord of the Rings so I wanted to use this as my hook for a long-distance journey, dress as Frodo, get people talking and raise money.”
Dan has 26 days to complete his quest, which he is doing for the East Cheshire Hospice. He said: “I am taking a month off work so effectively donating a month’s wages to the charity. They do so many great things and everyone knows someone affected by cancer, so I wanted to give them my support.”
Having previously run from Land’s End to John O’Groats, Dan is used to extreme challenges.
“I’m looking forward to this,” he added. “I have no route or plan and no accommodation booked. I’ll just see what happens each day.”
