Overnight between Sunday, December 11 and Monday 12 three other vans in the High peak were also targeted however thieves left empty handed.

A spokesman for Derbsyhire Police said: “Offenders gained access to a white Peugeot van after smashing the drivers light and forcing the lock.

“Once inside, they stole two bags of Christmas presents and a range of power tools including Makita drills, a circular saw and a multi-tool.”

The theft took place along Macclesfield Road, thieves forced the side door of a Citroen Dispatch van that was parked along Harpur Hill Road, Harpur Hill but nothing was taken.

Damage was also caused to a van along Berwick Road in Harpur Hill after vandals damaged the dead lock in an attempt to gain entry.

Sergeant Denis Murphy from Buxton’s Safer Neighbourhood team, said: “Thieves are opportunists so don’t make it easy for them by ensuring that any valuables, particularly tools, are removed from vehicles overnight and stored securely. It only takes a few minutes but can prevent a lot of hassle if it stops a thief from breaking into your vehicle.”

“I would like to encourage anyone with information about the thefts to come forward and let us know.

“It is often by putting together small pieces of information that we are able to identify offenders and bring them to justice. So any information, no matter how small, may really help to make a difference.”

Advice to keep vehicles safe:

Before leaving a vehicle unattended, ensure it is properly locked, with the windows up and the alarm activated;

Wipe away any visible marks left behind by a phone cradle or sat nav;

Where possible, try to remove all valuable items, especially tools, out of the vehicle completely. If this isn’t possible, always keep them out of view from passers-by;

Security mark all of your valuables to help make them easily identified and traceable should they be stolen and recovered. This also makes them less attractive to thieves;

Remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to police on 101 or 999 in an emergency.
