Andrew Lewer – who was elected to represent the East Midlands as a Member of the European Parliament in Brussels last May – resigned from Derbyshire County Council on Monday.

His departure will trigger a by-election in his Ashbourne seat.

Mr Lewer said his resignation was timed to ensure the by-election takes place at the same time as the General Election on May 7, saving the taxpayer money.
