Food festival lets you taste something new

Foodies can taste cuisine from around the world at the first ever Buxton Food and Drink Festival.

The event has been planned between 4pm and 11pm on Friday, July 12, and will take place in the Pavilion Gardens.

Coinciding with both the Buxton Festival and Fringe and the carnival, organiser Maxine Pearson hopes the event is to be the first of many to come.

She got the idea for the festival after taking her business, Maxine’s Mobile Pizza, to various food markets around the area.

“I’ve been doing street food doe nearly two years and I go to lots of food festivals and I just thought it was a real shame that Buxton hadn’t got one,” she said.

Maxine said the idea of having the festival during the evening was so that people going in between Fringe shows could nip in and get something to eat.

“People don’t always have the time to book into a restaurant to eat,” she added.

“Lots of tourists come into the town on a Friday and it’s also carnival week so the timing was just right.”

Maxine already has more than 20 stall holders signed up to take part in the event, serving a variety of hot and cold food from all over the world, including India, China, Spain, Thailand, Mexico and Italy.

There will also be old favourites on offer such as a hog roast and lots of food that can be taken away such as fresh bread and cakes.

Maxine said this year’s festival will be a test to see how well it goes.

She explained: “If we’re successful the plan is to do one on a Friday and Saturday next year.

“I’m hoping on the back of this as well to set up a monthly food fair along Spring Gardens with the help of High Peak Borough Council, bringing in over 20 food and drink related stalls, similar to the fine food fair that goes on in Leek every month. It would be great for the town.”

As well as the food and drink stalls, the festival will have entertainment on offer, with buskers playing guitars, as well as music from Albert’s Skiffle Band.

Anyone who wants to play music at the festival is invited to contact Maxine on 07810516571.
