Eyam rambler’s coastline cash bid

Retired painter and decorator Charlie Blackwell, of Eyam, was joined by friend and fellow walker Al Monkman, of Scotland, for the challenge which saw them tackle all 870 miles of the new Wales Coastal Path.

The experienced long distance walkers set off from Chester on April 24 and still had a spring in their step as they arrived in Chepstow on May 30, averaging a remarkable 165 miles per week.

And every mile along the route - which took in some of the most spectacular views in Wales - raised vital funds for Sheffield’s only hospice!

“We’ve had no aches, no pains and no blisters,” said Charlie, who celebrated his 64th birthday in the middle of the walk.

“We had great conditions too, with 80 per cent fine weather, though there was one day when we had hail stones, a thunder storm and bright sunshine.”

All along the route, Charlie and Al were greeted by well-wishers who were happy to make their contribution to the St Luke’s fundraising, taking the final total to more than £1,000.
